JUDGE BATTLE PRESIDES.
Halifax Goes Into the Hands of the Whites—Even Republicans Are Pleased.

Weldon, N. C., Dec. 6.—(Special.)—Judge Dossey Battle, the new judge of the Eastern Criminal circuit, who defeated T. H. Sutton, is holding his first court in Halifax this week. Judge Battle was on hand promptly yesterday and his genial presence in the court house gave to Democrats their old time cheerful smiles. He ascended the bench as if to the judicial ermine born. His address was a masterpiece, forceful, clear and comprehensive. He presides with dignity and gives great satisfaction, even to those who opposed him in the recent campaign.

All the county officers qualified yesterday and were inducted into office. The new board of county commissioners organized and elected W. T. Parker chairman. The old county is once more in the hands of Democrats, and even the Republicans appear to be in better spirits, all except, of course, those who go out of office.
