War Against Wolves
R. L. Anderson, government wolf hunter, informs us that the last regular session of the Arkansas Legislature failed to set aside any money to supplement that appropriated by the federal government, for the purpose of exterminating the wolves in those sections of the state which are troubled by these animals. Hence, unless some means are devised at the coming legislature, to take care of this, Mr. Anderson says that some seventy-five counties of the state will be without protection from wolves, for he states that there are wolves in practically all of the counties of the state.
To those living in more populous counties and communities, said Mr. Anderson, the need of this appropriation is less apparent than in those districts which suffer from the inroads of wolves on sheep, hogs, and young calves.
For the remainder of the fiscal year, he further stated the extension division of the University of Arkansas has arranged to take care of the work. But after that it will be a matter for the several counties to attend to unless the state or federal government come to their aid. The federal aid is contingent on an appropriation by the state.
Mr. Anderson left this morning for Baxter and Sharp counties on a wolf hunting expedition. He is offered a position in New Mexico in this same work, and has offers in other states of like nature in the event his work in Arkansas is terminated by lack of funds to carry it on.
