That Brown, the Collector of the port of New-Orleans, who had robbed the publick chest of upwards of $150,000 had been pursued by the 65 to Jamaica, where he was, at the time the 65 left that island.
That he had deposited the money in the hands of Messrs. Dick, Orr, and Clark, opulent merchants of that place, and had obtained bills drawn on David Hicks, Esq. Church-street, London.
On application to the authority for the apprehension of the villain, it was found that it could not be legally interfered with. Brown threatened to prosecute capt. Carter for defamation of character!
The merchants who drew the bills on London in favour of the culprit, seemed disposed to do every thing in their power for the recovery of the money, and have taken measures to stop the payment of the bills drawn by them in favour of Brown.
