PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Sept. 9, 1881.
To the Editor of The Morristown Gazette:
HOW THEY SPEND THE TIME.
The city has been dull for the last three weeks, but is now becoming lively, as those who spend the summer at watering places are now returning, despite the fact that September opens with exceedingly oppressive weather. I notice that most of those who leave the city for health and recuperation during the warm season, come back in the fall looking thinner and more peaked than when they left. In seeking rest and quiet they go to crowded resorts where hundreds have gathered, some for rest, but the most for a good time. Here is a sample of a day of rest they enjoy: Rise at 10 o'clock, breakfast: walk themselves to death before dinner, calling it a promenade; after dinner an excursion or something to tire them further; and to put themselves in condition to dance, play cards or something of the kind till the small hours of the morning. Next day the same round of dissipation, and this for days and months. Is it any wonder they come home looking worse than when they left? When you meet a friend looking haggard and pale, he hasn't been sick—only enjoying rest at a fashionable watering place.
But to come back to city matters:-
Mayor King has just made a new departure in the way of appointments, having added two colored men to the police force. One of the old force, Jordan by name, was highly incensed when the appointments were made, and declared that "he wouldn't serve with any nigger." So he resigned, and it is expected a colored man will take his place. All the leading daily papers sustain the Mayor in his recognition of the colored people and tax payers. Speaking of the police, Philadelphia has one of the finest in the world. They have a larger territory to patrol than those of New York, yet the force is only about two-thirds as large, and their work is much better done. The "Boss" rules here. This is his paradise. Everything seems to be run by him, and here he may be seen in his originality. At the late election the people were successful in defeating the ring candidate, and electing their own candidate. The street car fare is now six cents and the fight is to reduce it to five. It remains to be seen who will win.
The jury in the case of Jennie Cramer have rendered a verdict that she came to her death by poison and violence, and that James Malley, Jr., is criminally responsible, and Walter E. Malley and Blanche Douglass morally for the same.
