MARTINSBURG, January 6.

Our readers, it is hoped, will excuse the barrenness of this day's paper, when informed that the Mail had not arrived when it was put to Press.

Extract of a letter from a young gentleman of this town, now at Natchez, dated the 9th December.

Speaking of the climate, &c. he says,

"I will venture to make one observation, which I believe will apply both to this and the Louisiana country in general, more especially to any part below the mouth of Ohio River—that is—that few persons from the Northward, can reside here any length of time, without undergoing, what the people of this country term a seasoning, by which is meant a very severe spell of sickness, and in which a great many lose their lives."
