Sen. Jackson Says U.S. Should Step Up Building Of Nuclear Attack Subs
CAMDEN, N.J. (P) - Sen. Henry Jackson, (D-Wn.), said Saturday Russia has made "remarkable progress" in development of atom powered submarines. He said the United States should step up its production of attack submarines to meet the threat.
He made the remarks in a talk at the launching of the nuclear attack submarine Haddo at the New York Shipbuilding Corp. yards.
Jackson, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the Haddo will play a major role in meeting the growing Russian submarine threat.
"The Soviet submarine threat confronts this nation with a defense task as formidable as any facing us," he added.
One of the best ways to hunt and kill an enemy nuclear submarine, Jackson said, is with another nuclear submarine.
The Navy said it now had 16 nuclear attack submarines in commission, 9 under construction and 8 scheduled for construction under its building program for the fiscal year which began July 1.
Four other attack submarines have been launched but not yet commissioned.
