Late letters from Europe, mention all Italy to be in a state of disorder. The people dreading above all things a visit from the armies and fleets of France. The Pope had held a Consistory, in which it was agreed to raise a general tax upon all his benefices, to contribute to the defence of the ecclesiastical states, and to succour the King of Sardinia. It is also said that the prejudices of his subjects operate strongly against the present Pope, Pius the 6th, and his conclave; the old verse constantly recurring to their imaginations— Semper ubi Sextis perdita Roma fuit.
