YOUNG PITNEY WILL HUSTLE
Johnston Cornish Will Make Things Lively for Him—Washington Gossip.

WASHINGTON, April 9, 1896.—There has been but very little done by Congress this week that is of more than ordinary interest to the people of New Jersey, excepting the passage of the Rivers and Harbors bill and the Cuban concurrent resolutions. Yesterday in the House, Congressman Pitney accepted an invitation to put himself on record as being opposed to the taxation of the nation for the benefit of a single locality. The occasion was the bill to provide a free library for the District of Columbia, which has been so amended as to provide that the Government should pay one-half of the expense of such a library. Mr. Pitney spoke on the question, and with considerable effect. He said in substance that he was heartily in favor of a free library in the District, but he believed that the District of Columbia ought to pay for it. He did not think that citizens of New Jersey or California should be taxed for a library that could only be used by people residing in Washington. He favored a free library, but opposed the effort to make the Government pay for it. The amendment was defeated.

Congressman Pitney yesterday was asked by your correspondent if he expected to be renominated. He did not answer the question in a direct manner, but said:-

"If I am I will do some tall hustling."

"Will that be necessary?"

"Yes, for the district has a normal Democratic majority."

There is a large number of New Jersey people in Washington at present, and prominent among them is Frank A. Magowan, Trenton's former Mayor, who stopped a few hours in Washington on Monday, but declined to be interviewed. He said he was on his way to Trenton.

Philip Leve, of Paterson, is representing his town at the National League of Musicians' Convention at Washington.
