From the Boston Gazette.
Messrs. Printers,
The following translation of an extract
from a Sermon, "Sur la Fausseté de la
Gloire Humaine," by the celebrated Massillon,
appears to me very apropos after reading
in Governor Gerry's Inaugural Speech to
the Legislature of Massachusetts, his ex-
traordinary panegyric on Napoleon Bona-
parte. If convenient and agreeable to you,
please give it a place in your paper.
Yours, &c.
AN AMERICAN.
"What is a sovereign born with a fiery
valor, and whose brightness shines every
where from his earliest years, if the fear of
God does not conduct and moderate him--
a new and malignant star, which announces
only calamities to the earth : The more he
shall increase in his fatal course, the more
shall the public miseries increase with him :
His most rash enterprizes will offer but a
feeble barrier to the impetuosity of his ca-
reer : He will think to efface by the eclat of
his victories, their temerity or injustice.--
The pleasing hope of success will be the
only title by which he will justify the e-
quity of his arms: All which shall ap-
pear to him glorious, will become as law-
ful. He will regard the moments of a wise
and majestic repose, as a shameful idleness,
and as moments which are stolen from his
glory. His neighbors will become his ene-
mies, whenever it shall be in his power to
conquer them--His people themselves shall
furnish with their tears and their blood, the
sad materials for his triumphs--He will
exhaust and overturn his own states, in or-
der to conquer them anew-He will arm
against his people and nations--He will
trouble the peace of the universe-- He will
render himself celebrated by making mil-
lions unhappy. What a scourge to the hu-
man race !-And if there is a people upon
earth capable of bestowing praises upon him.
it is only to them that such a master ought
to be wished."
