Full Text

Among the circumstances which almost daily thicken around us to show the industry and preconcerted system of the present opposition in England, is the return of Mr. Cobbett to that country; his flight from which sufficiently indicated his regard to personal safety, to warrant us in believing that he would not return without adequate assurance of important changes in contemplation.

One of his sons was in this neighborhood a few weeks ago; when he observed that a revolution was in train, to be developed early in June, 1820; shortly before which time his father would arrive in England, to take a part in the scene. But as he had lately received very important communications, by which it appeared that the plot in contemplation would be ripe for operation in November or December: that consequently Mr. Cobbett would cross the Atlantic by or before that time. He has lately departed accordingly.

The reformers in this country have clandestinely disinterred the bones of Thomas Paine, and sent them to England, with the avowed intention of erecting a splendid monument over them; no doubt for a political effect.

The Manchester affair has brought out and added great weight and energy to the cause of Reform. A general burst of indignation breaks, in a voice of thunder, upon the ears of the government. An important crisis seems near and inevitable.

It is said the Irish are at present cool, from the recollection of backwardness of the English people, from whom they expected support, during their own rebellion; but it is believed a decisive step by the reformers will bring them out.
