On The Scene In Washington
By Travis K. Hedrick
A little cherub, rosy cheeked and wearing a union button for a safety pin on his diaper, came whizzing into this office today to whisper that the country is safe and Franklin Roosevelt will win Nov. 7.
This sterling voiced prophet told me that at the outside, Dewey wasn't going to carry more than these states: Maine, Vermont, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Colorado, with a close vote in prospect.
"Gosh," I replied, "that gives Buster only 53 electoral college votes, out of 531. What about Iowa?"
The cherub looked disgusted at my lack of faith and said, "So give Dewey Iowa's 10 votes. That makes it 63. And throw in New Jersey's 16 votes, if you want, since ex-Gov. Charles Edison has given up the state without authority from the people up there."
We stopped at this point to sum up. The cherub's total for Dewey stood at 79 electoral college votes, leaving Pres. Roosevelt with a swell-looking landslide of 452.
After the cherub waltzed out of the office singing "Solidarity," there was some more figuring to do. Supposing we got extra generous and on top of all this we gave Dewey New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, which have a total of 126 electoral college votes?
Even then, the figures show Roosevelt the winner with 326 electoral votes to 205 for Dewey. And everybody knows that Dewey simply cannot carry all of those four major states.
Till Nov. 7th we'll rock along with the cherub and 79 for Dewey.
