To the People of England.
Tu ne cede malis, sed contra, audentior ito.
VIRG.
If ever the long pull, the strong pull, and the pull altogether, was necessary for the salvation of the country, it is at the present important crisis which calls for all our exertions and demands our utmost abilities. The fate of England depends on the conduct of the hour.
The most ferocious, the most numerous and the most formidable nation this day existing, has entered into a solemn league and covenant to extirpate the whole English nation; to annihilate our king and constitution; to confiscate the estates of the Noblesse, and to melt them down into the Canaille; to guillotine our bishops, and to equalize, that is, to seize all the property in the kingdom.
Is not this a most awful consideration? and will it not awaken our ardour, and rouse our resentment? shall we tamely be borne down, like Dutchmen; become spontaneous slaves like Dutchmen, and sue for peace? shall we hail and feast, and caress this infernal banditti of professed robbers at London, as the Dutch have done at Amsterdam? shall we admit them into our houses, as Dutchmen have done; permit them to ravish our wives and to devour our daughters, and accept of our property as Dutchmen have done? Shame to the advisers of such an ignominious measure! Curse on the thought! Sooner may the Ocean, hitherto our Guardian mound, our kind protectress, burst its boundaries, and deluge the island in one great mass of ruin than that Britons should become the spontaneous slaves of France, and kiss the rod of Despotism as Dutchmen have done.
