What is this article about?
A subscriber writes to correct a widely published false story claiming George Washington's niece applied for poor relief in North Shields, England. He states Washington had only one niece, his aunt Mrs. Charles Carter, who never left Virginia and died in his county about 20 years ago.

Messrs. Editors:—I have this evening seen a paragraph in your paper, which has gone the rounds in many newspapers, stating that an account lately applied to the overseers of the poor of St. Mary's parish, North Shields, England, for relief. I have seen the same paragraph in a late Alexandria paper, and was rather surprised that the intelligent editor of that paper, living, as he has done all his life so near the residence of Washington, should have published, without comment, so absurd a story. Now, Messrs. Editors, as a friend to truth, (not that I think the tale of much importance) beg leave to state that Gen. Washington never had but one own niece (any way related) and she never was in England certainly, and I believe never left this country. My aunt, the late Mrs. Charles Carter, was the only one, and she died in this county about 20 years ago, never out of her native State (Virginia), and who died in my house four years since.
