CRIMSON (Continued from Page 6)
"you, Dr. Toler, is there anything normal in a man dying from the bite of the cascabel off the coast of Maine?"
"No," said Toler, dazedly shaking his head. "No, it is not normal. It is mad! The cascabel is the neo-tropical rattlesnake found only from Mexico southward to Argentina."
"This is puerile!" cried Castian, suddenly. "why must you assume that Santrey died from the bite of this tropical snake? Could it not have been an ordinary timber rattlesnake?"
"Nein, nein!" said Dr. Toler. "There is only one snake whose selective venom attacks the muscles of the neck and paralyzes ther. The cascabel rattler. The only rattler whose venom destroys nerves instead of blood. It could be no other."
"But—"
"Are you going to argue with a famous herpetologist?" Kirby asked Castian acidly.
"I'm not arguing," Castian replied wanly. "I'm only trying to find another answer to this deplorable mess. Why—why this means that Santrey was murdered!"
"An ugly word," said Dr. Straater. "But you're right."
"Murder . . ." said Harding, groaning. He whirled on Kirby, at his side. "Murder, Bruce! You understand?"
"I'm trying to understand." Kirby said slowly. "But I don't. I can't see how this ties in with what you mean—the letter."
"What are you talking about?" asked Castian, quickly.
"Something between Emery and myself."
"Oh." Castian eyed Kirby with suspicion.
"But what," asked Dr. Straater of the group at large, "was the motive for killing an old man like Santrey—a harmless old codger?"
"There is only one reply to that," said Kirby.
"And that is?"
"Santrey knew something—too much for his health. He was silenced."
