WINTHROP'S NAME
DOCTOR JOHNSON ASKS WITH-
DRAWAL OF MEASURE
President of Institution Feels Com-
pensated for Services by Lives
of School's Graduates.
Special to The Herald and News.
Columbia, March 14.—The bill
proposing to change the name
of
Winthrop college to Winthrop-John-
son college, after being passed by
the senate, was killed in the house
last week at the request of Dr. D. B.
Johnson, president of Winthrop.
The bill was introduced by Sena-
tors J. E. Beamguard of York, J. E.
McDonald, Jr., of Fairfield and R.
S. Rogers of Dillon. It was passed
by the senate, not however without
much debate, last Wednesday night.
Doctor Johnson, reading of the
senate's action
in a
Thursday's
newspaper, wrote the three authors
of the bill that the bill be withdrawn.
He felt, he said, that he had been
compensated for his 40 years service
as president of the college by the
lives and service of the state of more
than 10,000 young women gradu-
ated by Winthrop. "I have not ask-
ed or expected any further reward
for myself," he said.
The letter received by the sena-
tors was given to Representative I.
J. Campbell of York, who made a
motion to recall the bill from the
house committee on education and
then, when the measure had been
returned, moved that it be with-
drawn and removed from the files of
the house. He desired that letter
from Dr. Johnson to be read which
explained his motion.
The letter, directed to the three
senators, after mentioning the fact
that Dr. Johnson
had seen, in a
newspaper, an account of the pas-
sage by the senate of a bill introduc-
ed by you in conformity with the
request of our board
of trustees,
faculty, alumnae and student body to
change the name of Winthrop col-
lege, the South Carolina College for
Women to "Winthrop-Johnson Col-
lege, the South Carolina College for
Women" in recognition of my 40
years of service to the college con-
tinued as follows:
"I am deeply grateful to you, the
senate of South Carolina, our board
of trustees, faculty, alumnae and
student body for this expression of
the desire to do me honor in this
connection, but I feel that I am suffi-
iently rewarded for anything and
everything I may have been able to
do in the establishment and develop-
ment of this state college for women
by the lives and service to the homes.
the schools and all of the best in-
terests of the state of the 10,000 wo-
men who have been trained by Win-
throp college during its 40 years of
life for the duties of life and for ser-
vice to the state.
I have not asked or expected any
further reward for myself.
I prefer that the name of the col-
lege shall remain "Winthrop" as it
has been for 40 years from its be-
ginning up to this time. I ask,
therefore, that you kindly withdraw
the bill.
I do, earnestly desire and request,
however, that Winthrop college may
receive adequate support by the state
that it may be able to care for and
educate properly the young women
of South Carolina desiring to come
here to avail themselves of the op-
portunities offered here by the state
for the education of young women
for life's duties.
Very
sincerely yours,
D. B. JOHNSON.
President.
The motion to table was carried
and on motion of J. L. Love of
Greenville, the house by a rising
vote, expressed its appreciation of
the high sentiment shown by Doctor
Johnson in requesting the withdraw-
al of the measure.
Opposition to the bill in the sen-
ate was based upon the contention
that it was "in bad taste" and that
no honor would be done Doctor
Johnson by taking the action pro-
posed in that he had already writ-
ten himself large in the life and
character of the womanhood of the
state. Proponents of the bill urged
its passage as a fitting tribute to a
man who has labored long and ef-
fectively for the upbuilding of the
citizenship of the state through its
schools and homes.
