Chip Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Cox, was second place winner in the regional spelling bee held at Brogden Hall, Wilmington, Friday night.
He is a seventh grader in the Tabor City Schools and is twelve years old.
Twice winner of the Columbus County "Bee" Chip has received two scholarships to Wilmington College.
As second place winner Friday evening he received a $400 complete volume of Encyclopedias Britannica with 11 competing in the regional contest. The encyclopedia company will also send a film to T. Ward Guy, superintendent, to be used in the Columbus County schools.
Brenda Gayle Tripp of Shallotte was first place winner and will represent this region in Washington, D. C. at the national contest.
