Senator Talmadge Warns That Political Greed Will Bring Chaos To The Nation

Senator Herman Talmadge declares that the South today is the sacrificial goat of selfish and evil men.

In discussing on the floor of the Senate the proposition to extend the civil rights commission for another year, he lambasted the commission and the psychology of those who seek to force race mixing on the nation.

"They have sought to corrupt our revered heritage of constitutional civil rights-spelled R-I-G-H-T-S-into a cult of contrived civil rites-spelled R-I-T-E-S -and to make of those who dare to oppose their evil designs and selfish schemes sacrificial goats upon their altars of political expediency and personal aggrandizement."

Who'll Be Next?

And then he cautioned the Senate:

"It would be well for Senators to contemplate who may be the sacrificial goats of tomorrow."

And here's what he said:

Mr. President, if progress were dependent on no more than the mere passage of laws, the output of the Congress of the United States alone already would have established a worldwide Utopia.

Were that the case there would be no human problem which could not be solved by the enactment of a new law.

Were that the case everyone could be made healthy, happy, wealthy, wise and equal by statute.

Were that the case churches, armies, courts, schools and all the other institutions and instruments of our imperfect society could be superseded by an omnipotent super-legislature dedicated to the achievement of absolute human perfection.

Not So Simple

Unfortunately, the complex problems of society are not susceptible to so simple a solution.
