TRIUMPH CERTAIN.
Since the assembling of the Administration Conventions in the different States, but more especially since the publication of the conclusive address and testimony of Mr. Clay, and the subsequent appearance of the admirable and convincing address of the Administration Convention of Virginia, the anxieties and apprehensions of the Opposition party in Congress are very highly written on their countenances.
When they had just succeeded in the election of their Speaker, there was nothing to be heard but the language of congratulation passing from one to another—nothing to be seen but the triumphant glances of men assured of the prize for which they were contending, and calculating upon the share which each individual would obtain. There is a manifest change within the last two or three weeks. The faces of the Jacksonmen are now all longitude: They are awakening from a deceitful dream.
The classics of one orator, the metaphysics of another, and the special pleading of a third, are all insufficient to sustain hopes from beneath which the pillars are every day mouldering. The great effects anticipated from celebrations of the 8th of January have evaporated as rapidly and as innocently as the wine which was consumed on that occasion ; and the fears which the most rational and reflecting of the party have always felt of a reaction destructive to their projects and prospects, are now evidently obtaining the mastery over their wishes. The reaction has commenced in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North-Carolina, and is spreading itself—with irresistible force into those other States which have been heretofore entirely claimed by the Opposition. The triumph of truth is certain.
