ODE

On the arrival of his Excellency General Washington and Governor Clinton, in New-York, on the 25th of Nov 1783.

Tune- " He comes ! He comes "

He comes! they come! they come!
With sounding fife, and thundering drum,
Their ranks advance in bright array,
The Heroes of AMERICA.
He comes ! 'tis mighty WASHINGTON!
Words fail to tell all he has done ;
Our Hero, Guardian, Father, Friend !
His fame can never, never end.
He comes ! he comes ! 'tis Clinton comes
Justice her ancient seat resumes.
From shore to shore let shouts resound,
For Justice comes with Freedom crown'd
She comes ! the tir'd Virgin's ease
And bids grim War his rage to cease.
Oh ! blooming Virgin, rise in joy,
And bless, oh ! bless AMERICA.
Now Freedom has our brows with crown'd
Let flowing goblets pass around :
We'll drink to Freedom's fav'rite Son,
Health, Peace, & Joy to WASHINGTON
