"By a gentleman who arrived in this city last week from Nashville, we learn that Mr. Clay's denial of the charges preferred against him by Gen Jackson, had reached that place, and that a rumour was afloat there that Mr. McLane of Delaware was the gentleman to be given up as the bearer of the propositions. We could not ascertain upon what grounds the rumour was predicated; but were told that it had gained credence in Nashville Mr. McLane, we believe, supported Mr. Crawford throughout the Presidential canvass. He gave him the State of Delaware by his vote in the House. With a knowledge of these facts, we are at a loss to determine his motives in urging Gen Jackson to accept the proposals, or "fight the intriguers with their own weapons." Can it be possible that Mr. McLane would voluntarily place himself in such an odious predicament? Vote for Mr. Crawford, and at the same time advise one of his own competitors to engage in a scheme to defeat him?"
