It was announced today by James J. Connors, Collector of Customs, that Public Law 476 signed by the President last Wednesday eliminates the requirement for American vessels to clear from Alaska ports for Seattle or other mainland ports in the continental United States: also shippers declarations are no longer required for shipments from Alaska to the United States if moving by American vessel. It was emphasized by the Collector that this law pertains only to vessels but that the Bureau of Census in a telegram to the local Customs office stated 'Changes in the requirements for shippers/export declarations for shipment between Alaska and United States by means of transportation other than vessel will be announced later.'
The Collector further stated that the law eliminating clearances and shippers declarations applies to shipments northbound from the States to Alaska, as well as in the reverse direction. Alaska to the United States.
