From the Colonization Herald.

Thomas Buchanan, Esq., governor of the colony of Bassa Cove, in Liberia, has recently arrived in this city, in good health and in fine spirits. And, indeed, the information which he brings of the present condition and future prospect of our infant, but rising state, is well calculated to excite, in the bosom of every friend of the colored race, feelings of joy and animated hope.

Little more than one year has passed away since the people were collected on the spot which was then a dense wilderness, but now a neat and thriving village. The inhabitants are industrious, contented, prosperous, and happy; obedient to the laws, and zealous in sustaining the supremacy of the government.

Every man occupies his own lot, which in all cases, is well cleared, fenced, and teeming with luxuriant vegetation. Sunday and week-day schools have been kept up almost since the commencement of the settlement.

A weekly bible class and a night school is also held twice a week. All these are uncommonly well attended, and have had a great share in producing the happy change of characters exhibited throughout the community.

There are forty dwelling houses occupied, and seventeen unoccupied. The last mentioned are built for the accommodation of emigrants to be sent out from this country. Many of these houses are good log or frame buildings, the rest are small and of native construction, designed for temporary use.

Besides the dwelling houses there are two blacksmiths' shops, two stores, and two meeting houses; one of which is occupied as a school house. These except the two first are neat and substantial frame buildings. The public buildings are a large colonial warehouse—a jail and court house under one roof an agency house 50 by 25 feet, two stories high; a large boat house and some smaller temporary buildings. The town is well defended by three large guns. A long six pounder, in a commanding position, is mounted on a pivot, and two nine pound carronades on carriages, and kept in good order. "The male citizens over fifteen years of age have been organized into a militia corps, which meets for drill and parade once a week. The wet land in the vicinity of the town, has been drained so as to be cultivated. A tract of land, nearly a mile in extent; has been cleared of its timber at the southern extremity of the village. The town is beautifully situated at the mouth of the river St. John's on its southern bank, and facing the sea, from which it enjoys the advantage of a refreshing sea breeze constantly blowing throughout the day. In the rear of the village a beautiful little stream, called Benson's River, passes on its way to empty its waters in the St. John's. The rivers abound with excellent fish and oysters.

Thus situated and possessing the advantage of a magnificent inland country, admirably adapted for all the purposes of agriculture, Bassa Cove will doubtless advance rapidly to a conspicuous eminence among her sister states, and realize more than the most sanguine expectations of her friends and patrons. Will not such facts encourage all to rejoice in the success of the cause, and to aid in its future triumphs?

We understand that Governor Buchanan is daily expected in Harrisburg. We hope he will be prevailed upon to address our citizens and the members of the legislature, as he will be able to give interesting information upon the subject of our African colony.
