Messrs. Editors :
After the notice you have taken of the just tribute of respect lately paid by the citizens of Washington to M. De Neuville, Minister Plenipotentiary of his Most Christian Majesty to the United States, and his Lady, I presume you will not deem it irrelevant to publish the following inscription, prepared for a monument agreed to be erected by Congress to perpetuate the memory of the assistance given by the King of France to the United States, which I lately found in an old magazine of 1790, in the following words:
POST DEUM HILIGENDA ET SERVANDA EST LIBERTAS
MAXIMIS EMPTA LABORIBUS
HUMANIQUE SANGUINIS FLUMINE
IRRIGATA.
PER IMMINENTIA BELLI PERICULA
JUVANTE
OPTIMO GALLIARUM PRINCIPE REGE
LOUIS XVI.
HANC STATUAM PRINCIPI AUGUSTISSIMO
CONSECRNAVIT
ETERNAM PIIEIOSAMQUE BENEFICII
MEMORIAM
GRATA REIPUBLICAE VENERATIO
ULTIMIS TILA DIDIT NEPOTIBUS.
You are able to translate it, for the good of those who do not understand Latin. This monument has not yet been erected.

We had rather our Subscriber, being much more competent, should himself furnish us with a translation of the inscription.-Editors.
