Bee-Breeding in the West, By Thomas Affleck.—E. Lucas & Co. 112 Main St. P. O.
Mr. Affleck begins his treatise by stating what is very true, that a different system of Bee-breeding is requisite at the West, from that which obtains at the East. Not less by reason of the peculiarities of climate and soil, than the situation of the Western settlers as to the investment of capital. The latest inventions in the hive line at the East involve a considerable expense to put them into operation; in short, there is such a thing as a patent hive set up Mr. A. aims at introducing a hive which, although attended with little expense, shall prove advantageous in every respect, and so simple in its construction, that a Buckeye farmer will not be puzzled to put it together.
There is a good account of the Bee-moth in this excellent little tract, and a concluding essay on the natural history of the Bee. Every intelligent farmer raises Bees, and will consider this industrious little creature, so economical in its keeping, so productive in its labours, as one of his chief assistants Honey furnishes a good substitute for sugar, and the way one can eat flour-cakes with this condiment is by no means slow. We can cheerfully recommend this little work to those who would acquire a practical and familiar acquaintance with Bees, and feel sure that it will be of decided benefit to all those engaged in Bee-Breeding.
