Decay of a Moslem Versailles
Moulay Ismail of Morocco envied his French contemporary Louis XVI for the wonderful palace at Versailles and vowed that he would build one of greater magnificence in his own capital of Meknes. He was a powerful ruler, and for the 55 years of his reign he was untiring, both at warfare and at building.
His horsemen stormed down almost incessantly upon rebelling tribes, while he built great fortresses on the borders of his country, to repel invasion.
All that he found at Meknes, built by his predecessor, he demolished, and he put up new walls and a new palace with the aid of thousands of slaves.
Today, however, little remains of this "Versailles." Vines cover the crumbling walls, the waters of the fountains are stilled, and life in the vicinity is sluggish.
Stamps picturing the gateway to Meknes were issued for French Morocco in 1917 and 1923.
