THAT FORGED LETTER
Mr. McCrary Denies that He Signed It,
The whole Thing s Disreputable Forgery.
A few days ago the Knoxville Tribune published a letter signed by Geo. McCrary which we reproduced and expressed the opinion that he never signed it. The following letter just received shows that we were right.
Comment is unnecessary. He says:
"Old Town, Tenn., Oct. 26.
"MR. EDITOR: I would state that I have never signed any statement for publication or for any other purpose, in which I charged Maj. A. H. Pettibone with defrauding me out of $100, or any other sum of money, in connection with a suit against me in the United States Court at Knoxville, Tenn., and I am fully satisfied that Maj. Pettibone had nothing whatever to do with said prosecution, I am made to say in an article to which my attention has been called that was published some days since in the Knoxville Daily Tribune, and of which I had no knowledge, that I will vote for Robt. L. Taylor for Congress. This statement is a most infamous falsehood, as I expect to vote for Maj. A. H. Pettibone for that position, and I would say to my Republican friends that I hope they will do likewise.
Do not be led away by Democratic lies and be prevailed upon to betray your party, but stand firmly, as we did in 1861 for Union and an honest Government. Let all Republicans in the First District of Tennessee do as I have done, drop all personal feeling and on the 5th of November help to relegate Bob Taylor to private life. I, for one, can support no man for office who will countenance an attempt to attribute to me a newspaper article which I did not write or authorize written.
If my signature was obtained to the article in question, it was done without my knowing what I was signing, and I have no recollection of signing any article.
George McCrary."
