Editor Journal:—We learn, with regret, the circumstance of the good people of Evansville being thrown into an unusual and unnecessary state of excitement, by the report that a party of secessionists were descending the river for the purpose of attacking the town. I cannot conceive how it was that all the officials and dignitaries of your city seemed to credit this absurdity, and to allow the whole city to become inflamed, without stopping to think of the ridiculousness and improbability of such an affair.
Our town is the only one above Evansville where the secessionists have a foothold, and they, since their recent overwhelming defeat throughout Kentucky, are giving evident manifestations of weakness and debility. Since the departure of the fanatical company to the Southern army from our midst, our town, to the infinite gratification of every good citizen, and to the unusual quiet and good order of the people, has enjoyed a degree of repose and peace that is truly refreshing. Those persons who are left with us to agitate the question of secession, with a few exceptions, are not of the character of individuals who would be guilty of heading such an expedition as the one alluded to above.
The outrage committed upon the "Flag of our Union," last week, met the condemnation of every citizen of the town who had any respect for himself or for the peaceable position of Kentucky in this unfortunate difficulty. The offenders were arrested and fined; a public meeting of our citizens was held and resolutions were passed, which I send you; the Board of Trustees passed laws which will effectually stop such outrages, and the whole community throughout the county condemned and scorned the pitiful and ungentlemanly action.
The communication of "A Citizen," in your issue of the 24th, merits our warm endorsement and approval, and I can safely say for our citizens, that none but the most friendly and cordial feelings are entertained by them toward the citizens and the city of Evansville. Fools, bullies, idiots, and drunkards on both sides may rant and swear, but their "curses most always come home to roost."
The citizens of Evansville owe it to the peace and good order of their city, to ferret out the perpetrators of this infamous and fatal quiz upon them, and take steps that it shall not be repeated. The miscreant should be brought to justice. At any rate, the Union men of Owensboro protest against being made parties or implicated in the slightest towards lending their countenance to any such an expedition as that of making war upon our friends, relations and neighbors of Evansville. And if any such an expedition as that is projected here by the Secessionists, rest assured that you will receive full and ample details of it, long before armed men could reach you by land or water.
Very Respectfully,
D.

Main Argument
the report of secessionists attacking evansville is an absurd rumor; owensboro is peaceful, union-loyal, and condemns any such aggression, with secessionists weakened and discredited after recent defeats and flag outrage.
