The Attack upon Mr. Levy by Mr. Fazende.

Mr. Levy, a broker, who is well known in this city for years, and especially to newspaper men as thoroughly reliable in all of his statements, was yesterday assaulted upon St. Charles and Gravier street by Mr. Fazende, also a well known broker.

The assault was made unexpectedly upon Mr. Levy, who had no premonition that any violence was intended. It was continued from the street into the store of Mr. Maji, adjoining, and was only ended from pure exhaustion.

The Rencontre Yesterday.
ITS BEARING UPON THE INVESTIGATION.

The attack upon Mr. Levy yesterday by Mr. Fazende was a very unfortunate affair indeed, especially so in consideration of the fact that the former gentleman is thought to be the principal witness against Mr. Schneider, and Mr. Fazende is the gentleman with whom Mr. Schneider admits having had the transaction in Metropolitan Warrants, which has been alluded to in the papers. It will be regarded by the community, whether justly or not, as an attempt to intimidate a witness, and viewed in this light it will reflect very seriously upon those who are accused and whose acts are now under investigation at the Hall. Mr. Levy has done nothing so far as we can discern in this matter which should have brought down upon him the indignation of any one. He has given no information to this paper which to any one, save, perhaps, Mr. Schneider, could possibly take offense: on the contrary, he has been very guarded in the use of names, dealing mostly with facts, which the investigation has so far found to be true. We take it that Mr. Levy has only performed his duty in exposing the irregularities which were having a very damaging effect upon city securities, and which, to a certain extent, were injuring every individual in the community; and we conceive that so far from any blame attaching to him for his conduct, he is entitled to the thanks of every citizen for the fearless manner in which he has stepped forward to arrest a wrong which was silently but surely undermining the city's credit by destroying confidence in the city government. If Mr. Fazende had any personal grievance against Mr. Levy, other than appears upon the surface, it is unfortunate that he should not have waited until the present troubles were over, before attempting to call Mr. Levy to an account. We fail to see wherein Mr. Fazende has any just ground for complaint. No one has charged him with any wrong action; no one believes for a moment that he was amenable to such a charge. He simply acted as a broker in the matter, which he had a perfect right to do, and not even by implication can he be made a party to any illegal or improper action. We dismiss the matter, sincerely hoping that all further difficulty will be avoided for the sake of all parties concerned.
