Extract of a Letter from Aylesbury, Dec. 1.

"We have had great canvasing here since there has been a talk of expelling of Mr. Wilkes, Sir William L-r- has been very busy in behalf of his friend, Capt. -mmmo-; but it is not believed he will succeed, for two reasons; one is because it is very ungenerous and ungentleman like, in such a particular case as this, to solicit interest to succeed a man before it is certainly known whether he will be expelled; The other is because all the people of property and credit are in behalf of Mr. Wilkes. They are here no more friends to the Scotch Administration, nor the dregs of it, than the inhabitants of any other town in England. They declare, that if Mr. Wilkes should be expelled, they will re-elect him; and if he should be expelled again, they will remain without a Member 'till the next general-election, as was the case with Lyon, when Sir Robert Walpole was expelled. As to our common people, as soon as the report came that Martin had shot Mr. Wilkes in Hyde Park, they talked of raising their price to ten guineas a man: but as news is come that Mr. Wilkes is better, and as there is no truth in the report that the bullet was poisoned, all their talk has subsided; and such a spirit seems suddenly to have arisen, that if Mr. Wilkes, who is now more beloved than ever, must not be our Representative in Parliament, they will give their votes for nothing, to any body he shall recommend: Therefore, if there should be a necessity for another election soon, it is most probable, that the interest of Sir William Stanhope will prevail, because he is in the interest of Mr. Wilkes."

Locals oppose Scotch Administration and plan to re-elect Wilkes or go without MP until next general election, similar to Lyon's case under Sir Robert Walpole. Common people considered raising prices after shooting rumor but subsided upon news of Wilkes' improvement. Wilkes more beloved; voters will support his recommendation, favoring Sir William Stanhope's interest.
