Full Text

Among the persons killed in the late invasion of Texas by the Mexicans, was Mr. Charles Field, son of Mr. Lucius Field, now of Brooklyn, and formerly of Troy. Young Field was in 1840 a much esteemed member of the Tabernacle Church in this city, and soon after removed to La Grange in Texas, where he settled as a farmer, though then but nineteen years old. When the Mexicans invaded Texas with an army of 1300 men and captured San Antonio, they were attacked by Capt. Caldwell with 225 Texans. The Mexicans however, surrounded Capt. Caldwell's camp, when Capt. Dawson with 59 volunteers marched to his relief, and attempted to break though the Mexican lines. The attempt did not succeed, for the Mexicans fired grape shot upon them from cannon too well directed, and 35 of the brave 59 were instantly killed. Young Field was one of the number. Such are the bitter fruits of war.—Jour of Com.
