Full Text

The New York Herald's Philadelphia correspondent is authority for the statement that the election of Senator Cameron to the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee was the result of a conference in which it was decided to make Grant the candidate for the first place on the Republican ticket next year. Cameron was put forward because he represented the Grant idea. He met with little or no opposition because there was practically no opposition to Grant in the committee. Sherman and Blaine were in a hopeless minority, even had they combined their forces. At the conference the entire programme for the coming campaign was arranged. Sherman's friends were consulted to some extent, but Blaine was completely ignored. Perhaps it is due to this cause that the Plumed Knight is seeking to direct public attention to himself by an effort to incite insurrection in Maine. If the Herald's information is correct his effort comes too late.
