Memorial Sermon Urged Moral Responsibilities In War-Torn World
Endorsing a national defense program "in full swing because we can't ignore possible dangers," the Rev. R. M. Harris told members of the city's patriotic organizations in a Memorial Sunday sermon at the Episcopal Church that "the place of America is not on the battle front."
In these critical and solemn days eulogizing deeds of heroes is not enough, he said, but Americans must begin to cultivate the positive virtues and great principles for which men and women we honor today thought it worthwhile to fight and die. While we celebrate another Memorial Day, again we are compelled to work and plan for another day when "men shall learn war no more."
The place of America, he said, is that of a neutral nation so that when civilization disintegrates we remain a strong deliverer to rebuild and restore that which is broken down
"Our first duty," he charged, "is to strive for peace."
He held that not just any kind of peace is desirable. "Nations can have peace, yet live on low levels and pursue mean ends. A lasting
