The compliments to Mr. James Crawford, the Superintendent, and Mr. Levi Daigne, Coiner, of the United States Mint in this city, contained in the following reference to that institution in a letter written from here to the San Francisco Bulletin are well deserved: "The Mint is now, for the first time since it commenced operations, five years ago, working up to its fullest capacity, and to judge from the clanking of the machinery and busy hands and hurried footsteps of the employees from 8 to 4, there is no sinecure position in the institution. Under the vigilant management of such an able and honest Superintendent as Mr. Crawford, such a thing would be impossible. In view of the resumption of specie payment at an early day, the accommodations of the building are entirely inadequate for increased coinage, and it is to be hoped and expected that the present Congress will make an appropriation to enlarge it. One of the greatest disadvantages it has to contend with is the very stupid manner in which it has been planned, as if the architect's sole object was to see how very inconvenient a building could be made for that purpose. Mull ett, I believe, was the name of the architect. This institution has been noted for the frequent changes made in its officers—that in the coining department averaging one every year. The present Coiner came into office last August. Thinking to avoid the shoals and quicksands that have wrecked his predecessors' political barks, he has taken a new departure, and put his own shoulder to the wheel, thereby saving the Government the labor of one able-bodied man—an example worthy of emulation, in these days of economy and retrenchment, by the lazy, red-taped, kid-gloved officeholders in Uncle Sam's domain, who generally think that the hard work they do to get into office should excuse them from doing any there. As his probationary term is drawing to a close, and the Senate has yet to pass judgment upon his fitness for the position, this zealous labor for the interests of the Government ought not to go unrewarded. But as Republics are proverbially ungrateful, and the precedent established may be considered dangerous by the bread and butter brigade, it is not improbable that the verdict will be, 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant—depart in peace.'"
