DEFENSE TAX BILL PASSES HOUSE VOTE
3½ Billion Compromise Version Ready for Senate Action Tomorrow

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16. - The House of Representatives gave prompt approval today to the 3½ billion dollar compromise version of the new defense tax bill. The passage cleared the way for final action tomorrow in the Senate.

Recommendations made by a joint Senate and House committee were adopted without a roll call vote in the House.

However, flurries of criticism developed against some of the changes adopted, particularly the reduction of individual exemptions. These include the following: reduction from $2,000 exemption to $1,500 for married persons; $800 to $750 for single persons; and the elimination of the requirement that all married persons file joint income tax returns.
