WASHINGTON.
Washington, August 23.—During the first year that the business of the late Freedmen's Bureau has been under the charge of the Adjutant General's office in the War Department claims amounting to $602,954 have been prepared for payment and are only awaiting the claimants, and of the appropriation of $100,000 to carry on the business for the year ending June 30th, at least $42,000 will be covered back into the Treasury. The Secretary of the Treasury has directed that the interest due September 1st amounting to about $5,000,000, be paid on and after August 25th, without rebate. $424,228 have been paid.
