There have been several unpleasant and contradictory rumors floating in the New York city papers respecting a case of jealousy and stabbing on Staten Island. The Tribune gives the following explanations:

An English importing merchant of this city has been in the habit of visiting England in the prosecution of his business, and leaving his family (a lovely and accomplished wife of 30, and a daughter of 14,) under the protection of two young gentlemen, also in mercantile business, and both long established friends of the parties concerned. Last spring, the father repaired as usual, to England, and the two friends established themselves, in obedience to his standing invitation, in his house, at Staten Island. Shortly afterward, another friend of the family wrote to the merchant in England, to the effect that one of the young men with whom he had entrusted his family was playing him false. He immediately wrote to his family that he should return home in the Great Western, but got on board the Boston steamer, and thus anticipated his arrival by several days. He found his wife with her relatives in New Bedford, in company with her daughter, and brought them all on to New York—hurried down to Staten Island—found the suspected friend there, quietly waiting for them, and drawing a dagger, stabbed him in the breast. He then struck his wife with the dagger, but did not wound her dangerously. He was at length secured, in a state of insanity, and sent to the asylum, where he remained until Sunday, while his wife and daughter returned to New Bedford. The unhappy man has now recovered his reason, and has cause to believe that his wife was entirely innocent! The young man's condition is a perilous one, although he may survive the wound. We have been at pains to give the particulars of this sad case, because so many contradictory and painful rumors regarding it are afloat.
