Editor Daily Butte Record :--Did you
see in Saturday's North Californian, an
article headed "Partyism"? Said article
was penned, as shown by the subscriber to
it, by "Hermano." I am not so fortunate
as to know who this Solon, Hermano, is ; but
suppose him to be some one who is just a
few days over 21 years of age, or else one
who has never been interested in the poli-
tics and political movements of the country,
and so has stood as a mere looker on, and
if he ever voted for anybody for any office,
just made a grab, and voted the first ticket
he happened to grasp, especially if it hap-
pened to be anti Democratic.
Wise Hermano ! he comes out, as does the
pseudo neutral paper for which he writes,
and says he is down on parties and party
nominations Of course he is, and almost
any man is, when he knows that his party
is in the minority. O such a thing as a
party or parties, are then a nauseous
stench in the nostrils of a minority man
But, sir, let any party gain the ascendancy
over the Democratic party, and into it, be it
what it may, rushes every ism, faction, and
class of men who are prepared and well cal-
culated to give to our public officers and in-
terests that character and protection which
the wolf affords the sheep-fold. And among
those crowding into such a party, composed
of so many isms, &c., may be found those of
whom the Democratic party is ever rejoiced
to get rid.
But the above is not the precise object of
this essay. Solon Hermano winds up his
Borean blast upon the Democratic party,
and on partyism, by saying as follows :--
"Let partyism and clanism be kept out of
our municipal elections at least " "Bravo!
Now, I would like to ask wise Hermano how
he can reconcile his closing remarks with
those preceding, in which he says-"Our
party [having reference to our municipal
election] was placed in the field by the free
expression of the people's will, the other by
a political faction," &c, and further on
he says, after saying well of our nominees,
he can cheerfully support the nominees of
the other party
Now, sir, I wish to ask of wise Hermano if
he does not blow hot and cold in the same
breath? if not, how it is that he is down
on party and partyism so strongly, and in
the same exceedingly modest and patriotic
article, comes out openly in favor of a party,
and a party, too. for whose nominees he does
not dare to say more in praise, than he does
for the nominees of our own party? It is by
doing as the opponents of our party have
ever done--by stultifying himself, and by
begging the question.
Wise Hermano, thy zeal, is worthy of a
better cause, and when thou triest thy
goose quill again. touch not upon the hal-
lowed precincts of Democracy.
These are the views of one who has ever
been, and expects ever to be, whether in the
majority or minority,
A DEMOCRAT.
