The capture of Major General Lee, by a party of the enemy's light-horse, we are informed, happened the 13th ult. The occasion of so extraordinary an affair has been differently related, and various have been the conjectures of individuals respecting his Excellency's conduct at a juncture so very critical. To suppose that General Lee, after so many marks of his attachment, has thrown himself designedly in the enemy's way, without a thorough knowledge and investigation of the matter, would be too rash and ungenerous, notwithstanding the circumstance of declining a junction with General Washington's army, in consequence of a plan which he said, in answer to his orders, he had formed against the enemy, and wanted to execute.
They write from Baltimore, that when the house was invested wherein General Lee was taken by the enemy, he drew his pistols, and refused to surrender unless Colonel Harcourt would pledge his honour he should be treated as a Gentleman; upon its being granted, he delivered himself up. It is said General Howe met them on the road, took General Lee into his chariot, and conducted him to the camp.
