Full Text

The Public Schools.—The clerk of the City School Board this morning began at Peabody Hall the issuing of permits to children to attend the public schools and during the day issued 613 such permits—320 to white boys and 293 to white girls. On the corresponding day last year 738 permits were issued 366 to white boys and 372 to white girls. Permits will be issued to-morrow and on Wednesday to white children and on Thursday and Friday to colored children. The hall to-day was crowded with children and their parents, most of whom seemed to labor under the idea that if they did not get their permits at once they could not get them at all. Fair order, however, was maintained.
