CONGRESS.
Tuesday being New Year's Day, there was no session of either House. In the Senate, on Wednesday and Thursday, no important business was transacted. The bill 'further to establish the compensation of Officers of Customs, and to alter certain collection districts, and for other purposes,' produced considerable debate in respect both to its principle and details. The bill was postponed to Thursday next.
In the House, on Wednesday, an interesting discussion arose on Mr. Whitman's resolution respecting the difference between General Jackson and Judge Fromentine. Several of the members expressed themselves in opposition to any inquiry into the conduct of General Jackson, and a motion for the indefinite postponement of the subject was made and negatived. Mr. M'Lane proposed an amendment in substance that the President do communicate such parts of the correspondence as may be consistent with the public interest, which may have taken place between General Jackson and Judge Fromentin, and which has not heretofore been disclosed; with this amendment the resolution was adopted, and a Committee of two appointed to lay the resolve before the President.
The bill for making partial Military Appropriations for the year 1822, occupied the House in committee on Thursday, and occasioned considerable debate. The blank for the deficiency in the appropriation for Revolutionary Pensions was filled with the sum of $451,386 57.
