Joe Illiley, Citizen Sports Editor
Eddie Dyer, 86, Navy Second Class Petty Officer, stationed aboard the USS Bushnell, a native of Atlanta, Ga., with 17 years in the U. S. Navy, yesterday won the 1957 Naval Base Golf Championship by defeating Joe Bundy, Navy First Class Petty Officer, in a 36-hole final match at the Key West Golf Club, 8 and 7.
Dyer, also a member of the Key West Golf Club, recently elected third vice president of the golf club and the club's entertainment chairman, played fine golf throughout the day, being just 4 over par figures for the 82 holes required to nab the 1957 military golf crown yesterday.
SCORING SUMMARY, YESTERDAY'S NAVAL BASE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Morning Round
Par--72.
Dyer--75.
Bundy--81.
Dyer led 8-up following 27th hole
Dyer led 8-up following 27th hole; 9 holes to play.
Included in Dyer's scores were three birdies.
At the end of the first nine holes in the morning round, Dyer was nursing a one-up lead, having been penalized four valuable strokes for hitting a pair of drives out of bounds.
Dyer got his game well under control, with top chipping and putting, on the second nine in coming to 8-up at the halfway point in the match.
After lunch, Bundy rallied to birdie four on the long 20th hole and then came back to par the rest.
Yesterday's victory was not the first, by any means, for Dyer. He had previously copped the Naval Base title at Charleston, S. C. In both '54 and '55, and won first flight in State Amateur Championships in South Carolina in 1956.
Dyer resides at 34E Seaplane Base. Mrs. Dyer is the former Lillian Orlison, from Atlanta. The Dyers have four future golfers- Eddie, Jr., 7; James Frank, 1; Thomas Boyd, 3, and Larry Pelton, 15 months.
The first winner will be presented with a large trophy at ceremony slated sometime after the holidays.
For the record, Dyer resembles Desi Arnaz in physical makeup. He's just 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 147 pounds.
Dyer had toiled the final round in the championship flight earlier in the week by defeating Jim Braunor, 4 and 3 in an 18-hole semifinal match.
Bundy beat L. P. Jackson, 5 and 1 to enter the finals.
