THE PRESIDENT SUDDENLY RELAPSES INTO A VERY DANGEROUS STATE.
The following dispatches were received here yesterday:
WASHINGTON, July 23, 1:30 p. m. The president's symptoms less favorable. Chill this morning. Pulse 125, temperature 104. Discharge from the wound checked and some apprehension of abscess forming without outlet.
WASHINGTON, July 23, 7 p. m. -After the bulletin of ten o'clock a. m. the president's fever continued. At 11:30 o'clock a. m. he had again a slight rigor and his temperature subsequently rose until 11:30 p. m., when it was 104, pulse 125 and perspiration 26. Between this time and 1 p. m. respiration made its appearance and the temperature began to fall gradually. It is now 101 7-10, pulse 118, respiration 25. There has been a free discharge of pus from the wound this evening.
It is the opinion of some of the best physicians in Cairo that all the chances for the president's recovery are yet very much against him and that the symptoms, as given in the dispatches above quoted, indicate an unmistakable case of septicemia, or blood poisoning, which must necessarily terminate the president's life. One of our prominent doctors of medicine even ventured to predict that, if the dispatches were true, the country would be in mourning for a dead president within the next five days. Yet, in spite of this gloomy aspect of affairs, the people will hope for the best.
