AGAINST U.S. CONSCRIPTION
The St. Louis convention of the UAW-CIO voted to a man against compulsory military service in the United States at this time.
The resolution stated:
The CIO is in favor of national defense, but competent authorities hold that compulsory training is no necessary part of defense; the United States was founded on principles of democracy, which are not in accord with compulsory conscription; voluntary military service has been our tradition; a permanent large standing army is an incitement to war and a threat to the labor movement.
For these reasons, the convention voiced its "unalterable opposition to any form of compulsory military service at this time."
This is a major issue. It calls for the cooperation of every local and member of the UAW-CIO if the convention decision is to have its full effect.
Write your representatives in Washington today. Get your local to send telegrams. Have your friends, neighbors and tradesmen back up your views. Several hundred thousand letters and telegrams telling the senate and the house that the people do not want conscription will defeat this measure.
