Experiments with the incandescent electric light at the torpedo station at Newport have developed a novel use for the lamps in naval warfare. Lamps of about one hundred candle-power fastened on ends of poles submerged in the sea to the depth of twenty feet illuminate the water so objects can be distinguished within a radius of one hundred and fifty feet. There is little or no glare for the submerged light to betray the presence of boats using spears. It is believed a boat might countermine an enemy's field of submarine mines by cutting their cable or sweeping them to one side. It is probable torpedo launches will be equipped with these lights in future.
