At Basque Capital
(By The Associated Press)
HENDAYE, France, June 21 — The terror of Bilbao's 80 days of hell, believed by cowering citizens, ended when the Basque capital fell to insurgent armies, was renewed without warning when Lavalist airplanes raided the shattered city.
The Loyalist government enraged at the loss of the Biscay stronghold, that never before had been seized by an enemy, sent a great fleet of war planes over the city to carry out a threat of terror against terror.
Thousands of men, women and children ran for cover thru streets still piled with debris of the long Rebel siege, when the Loyalists planes roared over them. The Loyalists announced that scores of fighting planes participated in the counter attack and that six rebel planes were brought down in flames in a violent air battle.
When the raiders appeared, parties of Insurgent soldiers were removing scores of bodies from alleys, cellars and railway tunnels where they supposedly were shot by firing squads during a reign of terror that gripped the city as the Rebels pressed in upon it.
Most of the killings were said to have been the work of anarchist elements including Asturian Marxists who ran riot through Bilbao's streets after the flight of President Jose Antonio Aguirre and the members of his government.
The Loyalist air raiders evidently dispatched from Madrid and Valencia approached above heavy cloud banks and dived without warning on Rebel bombers and pursuit ships, circling the city on patrol duty. Machine gun bullets spraying Bilbao's streets as the air fleets fought their bitter battle at times soaring almost over the housetops.
It was indicated that the Loyalists air raiders were finally driven off by the superior force of Gen. Francisco Franco's aviation corps.
