PORTSMOUTH
TO THE PUBLIC.
THE State of this Province must be very critical in a short Time, (if I am not mistaken) for the Periods of our Paper Money now passing are nigh at Hand : And the Governments being hindered from making their Bills a legal Tender for the future, will effectually prevent the Use of Paper Money in common Business ; so that in a very few Years we must have either the hard Task of importing Silver or Gold from abroad to make a Currency, or else we shall have the harder of having no Money at all.
And as our Men of deep Penetration, are at present busily employed to find out Ways of making private Gain by the several Sorts of Bills already out, it were greatly to be wished that some one, forgetting his own private Interest for a few Days, would endeavour to set our impending Difficulties in so clear a Light, that every one might be sensible of them ; and then perhaps some Methods might be found out and prosecuted so vigorously as to alleviate, if not in a good Measure to prevent the bad Effects of changing our Medium of Trade.
