The story of creation involves the making of the sun, which in turn being the center of the solar system, would cause lesser planets by the thousands to just drop around as satellites. The one with which we are best acquainted and appears nearest us is the moon. It is the earth's satellite and it drops around in a cycle of twenty eight days. The most beautiful of satellites are said to be Saturn's rings which make such a colorful circle around that vast planet as to make it look like an orange in a bowl. Jupiter's satellites, that constellation of moons attracted by the great planet and moving with precision around it are also beautiful to see through the telescope.
From a study of the elements across centuries man has now come in to "make" a satellite. Born out of war minds and the struggle of nation against nation, there will in a few days appear in the universe a breath-taking project, a small, unmanned earth-circulating satellite which will open new frontiers of science in outer space. It has been referred to as history's first "artificial moon" and will be whirling around the globe at an altitude 200 to 300 miles an hour.
It will be seen that man has not been content to roam the earth; that his long dream is near fulfillment, the roaming of the universe.
The last two wars have made powerful contributions to man's study of the unknown, his far dreams to explore the universe and to find out as far as possible what lies in outer space are near realization. So he has contrived in this small messenger the means of gaining from them in signals the content of what lies beyond.
Apparently man turned away from a scientific study of brotherhood and those strange quirks infused into human nature so as to cause various dividends of races, opinions, religions and castes to nearly bankrupt the human race.
Man in his turn from those scriptural essentials exhorting the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, is making powerful gains in the field of science and invention and while we commend this bold prowess and welcome a newer scientific age, it is felt that the area of brotherhood might also grasp its satellite; that satellite of faith and unalterable appreciation of that genuine American slogan, "God our father, Christ our Redeemer, Man our brother."
So, man makes a satellite.
