Maxim Schapiro Concert Set for Library Fund October 24
Developing arrangements for the piano concert of Maxim Schapiro, to be given in Juneau October 24. Beta Sigma Phi sorority entertained Saturday noon at a luncheon in the Gold Room of the Baranof Hotel.
In honor of a group of rushees. the luncheon entertainment featured piano and violin numbers by Beta Sigma Phi members Dorianne Barnes and Mrs. D. C. Langdon.
The large table was attractively centered with an autumn bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums, with trailing sprays of asparagus fern.
Mrs. L. M. Dunlap and Mrs. J. H. Williams of the concert committee, introduced a note of business toward the end of the affair, since there are less than two weeks before the biggest project the club has yet undertaken.
Mrs. Dunlap stressed the fact to sorority members that the club is bringing the internationally known concert pianist to Juneau by air from San Francisco, where he has been appearing as soloist for the San Francisco symphony.
She pointed out that this affair may well prove to be a testing ground for Juneau's response to such concerts. "Several groups have tried for many years to bring worthwhile cultural programs to the city, but have failed because of the expense involved," Mrs. Dunlap said in urging members to see that the affair is a sellout, not only for the advantage of the Memorial Library Fund, but also because if it can be proved possible to pay for such concerts, it may mean that more artists will be interested in coming here in the future.
Tickets On Sale
Mrs. Williams listed downtown ticket headquarters, which include the Baranof Hotel desk, Alaska Electronics, Lu-Eks photograph studio, Alaska Music Supply and the Gastineau Hotel.
All members of the sorority will also have tickets for sale. Student tickets are available at the schools.
The concert will be held Thursday evening, October 24, in the Twentieth Century Theatre.
Mr. Schapiro, born in Russia, has made concert tours in Russia, Eastern Europe, the Orient, Canada and the United States. He is a laureate of the Moscow Conservatory of Music, and has studied under two famous teachers, Joseph Slivinsky, celebrated Polish pianist, and Nicholas Medtner, Russian composer-pianist.
This is the third large project in as many years that Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi has undertaken, in conjunction with its study program of the arts. The first project was a highly successful Alaskan Artists' show, where paintings by many talented Alaskans were exhibited. Last year's affair, during the study of dress and personal grooming, was the well-remembered fashion show luncheon and tea held in the Baranof Hotel to sell-out attendance
The study program this year deals in the arts of writing and music, and the concert thus will round out the year's activities.
