A private letter from Constantinople dated Sept. 3, says, "The Janissaries, tired with the present war, and not being able to avoid following the Grand Signor's orders to stay in the army, had recourse to a disguise to exempt themselves from it, but their scheme was discovered by the Kaimakan. They were dressed like Chokadars, that is, servants to people of distinction, but as their numbers increased daily, the Kaimakan had the curiosity to take off some of their shoes, to see if they had not the mark that all the Janissaries have round their feet, occasioned by the narrow red hose they wear, and by this means they were discovered. The Grand Signor reproached them in person, and after threatening them in case of any future event of the kind, he gave strict orders to make diligent search for them, and oblige all the Janissaries to join the Grand Vizir at the army."
