The spirit with which the Whigs enter into the contest of 1844, is a source of constant annoyance and painful anxiety to the Locofoco leaders, and cannot but convince them that all the demonstrations of the popular feeling exhibited in 1840 is again to be enacted, though perhaps in a different mode, but with redoubled enthusiasm. All the vast assemblages of the Whigs throughout the entire Union, the mass meetings, 'Avalanche Conventions,' the Clay Club gatherings, and every other exhibition of enthusiasm, must not only convince the Locofoco party of their utter hopelessness and abandonment of their cause, but learn them that the people know in whom to repose their confidence; that they know how to choose between the man without a heart, a man who carries out the principles of a tory in all its essential points, and the man, aye, the Statesman who has THRIce saved his country from destruction when thickly beset on every side by treachery. The locofoco leaders may wink at these vast assemblages of the people and endeavor to ridicule their doings in contempt, and persuade their deluded followers that it is for a mere show of strength—but in this they greatly deceive them, for it is universal spirit that pervades the whole people that is roused-it is the spirit of 1840 rekindled to burn with redoubled fury. The locofocos know too well the influence of these popular assemblages on their own party. They do not wish to have the great questions now at issue before the country discussed in the hearing of their followers, for they know the effect.—They wish to keep them in blindness and ignorance on all the important subjects, that they can better command them and render them subservient to their unholy and ambitious purposes. We hope no honest democrat will permit himself to be so far under the control of Political demagogues as to deny himself such a privilege as attending a political gathering where principles are fully and fairly discussed and fearlessly maintained.

The Whigs' enthusiastic gatherings in 1844 revive the spirit of 1840, convincing Locofocos of their impending defeat. The people prefer the statesman who thrice saved the country over the heartless Tory-like figure. Locofoco leaders try to downplay these events to keep followers ignorant.
